The Facets Cinémathèque, in cooperation with the Czech Center in New York is presenting Jan Svankmajer: Alchemist of the Surreal, a retrospective on the Czech master. Invoking the universes of Edgar Alan Poe, Lewis Carroll and the claustrophobia of Kafka, the work of Jan Svankmajer is bizarrely beautiful: a witty blend of the macabre, the grotesque and gothic horror! The series opens with the US premiere of his newest film GREEDY GUTS (OSTESANEK, 2001) on Friday, June 8, 2001 at 7 pm. Svankmajer's features ALICE, FAUST and PLEASURE CONSPIRATORS will screen along with several programs of his short films.
