Deadline.com is reporting that Universal is looking to FAST FIVE director Justin Lin and producer Chris Morgan to bring the TERMINATOR franchise back to theaters.
Hedge fund Pacificor bought the rights to the franchise from bankrupt Halcyon a year ago for $29.5 million. Pacificor was a debt holder in Halcyon, whose partners Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson paid $30 million for the franchise in 2007.
Loosing out the bid for the rights, Sony Pictures and Lionsgate walked away from the distributing the future films, which is where Universal stepped in. The bankruptcy nuked the plans for McG to continue the saga after his TERMINATOR SALVATION. Following the bankruptcy, William Wisher, who did uncredited writing on the first two TERMINATOR films, penned a treatment for a fifth and sixth film that follows the storyline set up in SALVATION, adding time travel back into the mix. It is yet to be determined whether Pacificor or Universal will go in Wisher's direction.
