Cuppa Coffee Titles Less Than Kind For Breakthrough Films

Breakthrough films recently enlisted Cuppa Coffee to produce an opening title sequence for LESS THAN KIND, a quirky new show about a dysfunctional Jewish family living in Winnipeg.

According to Cuppa Coffee Broadcast Producer Trevor Hembrey, Breakthrough had already developed an opening using driving shots they took around the city of Winnipeg; "They liked the original footage but weren't happy with the final treatment." Cuppa Coffee Director Ian Tucker came up with a creative solution.

"After watching the show it became clear to me that a nice motif could be pulled from what was then a temp logo, based on a famous Winnipeg highway sign with arrows pointing in all directions," he explains. "The sign seemed to symbolize the major themes of the show -- from the fact that the family runs an 'unsuccessful' driving school to the life of the overweight son, Sheldon."

From this logo Tucker expanded the highway sign motif to traveling arrows that reveal head credits as well as link to clips of the main actors in the show; a direct request from broadcaster CityTV. "Although the clips didn't immediately fit with the shots of Winnipeg, after working within the arrow motif everything seemed to fall into place really well," Tucker said, "the opening is very strong in communicating the major themes and tone of the show."

For Cuppa Coffee President Adam Shaheen, the title sequence is the latest in a string of equally successful and award-winning projects, having titled several of David Cronenberg's films, including EXISTENZ, SPIDER and EASTERN PROMISES, as well as Lewis Black's new series ROOT OF ALL EVIL.
