For the rest of this month, the Sundance Channel will be showcasing the films of Faith Hubley, her late husband, John, and their daughter, Emily. Faith Hubley has produced 20 independently animated films, in addition to the more than 20 films she produced with her late husband John Hubley. She has also worked in collaboration on films with her daughter Emily Hubley. Their work includes seven Academy Award nominated films, three of which won Oscars ("Moonbird," 1960, "The Hole," 1963 and "Tijuana Brass Double Feature" 1966). The Hubleys are widely recognized for breaking the notion that animation is "only" cartoon entertainment for children and introducing the medium to a much more mature audience, opening all kinds of possibilities for other filmmakers to make personal films. In 1997, Faith Hubley was chosen by the Independent Feature Project (IFP) West to receive the first ever Special Gotham Award for Animation for her outstanding commitment to independent filmmaking. The same year, the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York presented an exhibition on the work of The Hubleys, highlighting their importance as artists of a unique form of animation.
We would like to salute The Sundance Channel for highlighting the Hubleys' work as, not only animators, but important filmmakers. Their month long tribute is sure to expose many new viewers to their work and the wonders of animation. Like special programs on the Cartoon Network and "Spike and Mikes Classic Festival of Animation," this tribute brings festival quality work to a wider audience which in turn will hopefully make them hunger for more. Thank you Sundance Channel for utilizing your power as a broadcaster to bring unusual and exciting work to the airwaves.
