After claiming the U.S. box office crown over the Christmas weekend, CAST AWAY reclaimed the titled as BO champ for the New Year's weekend with a gross of US$31.2 million. The desert island adventure, with primary visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks, has floated $111.2 million in just 10-days of release. In fifth, Disney's THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE danced in with another $11.8 million. The new animated comedy has collected $47.9 million to date. Falling from fourth to sixth, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS grabbed an additional $7.8 million. The holiday hit, with primary visual effects by Digital Domain, has become the highest grossing film of 2000 with a cume of $252.5 million. Climbing back up a slot to finish seventh, VERTICAL LIMIT rescued $6 million. The snowy saga, with primary visual effects by Anohana Production Management and Technology LLC, has slid in with $49.7 million to date. Dropping a spot to land in eighth, DRACULA 2000 drained moviegoers to the tune of $5.3 million. The vampire yarn, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects, has flown in $19.6 million so far. Closing out the top ten for the second straight weekend, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON glided in another $3.57 million.
