Blinkink, Coldplay Team for ‘ALiEN HiTS/ALiEN RADiO’ Music Video

Isabel Garrett directs 28 global collaborators, including Sam Gainsborough, Will Wightman, and Studio Gruff, to create a mixed-media mosaic of life and love that premiered as part of the band’s ‘A Film for The Future’ project.

Blinkink’s Isabel Garrett served as a director on a global team of 28 filmmakers and artists for Coldplay’s just-released “* [rainbow emoji]” (also styled as ‘ALiEN HiTS/ALiEN RADiO’) music video.

The film combines live-action, hand-drawn animation, stop-motion, painting, nature documentary, and other mixed media.  Intricate 2D animated sequences are juxtaposed against hand-crafted stop-motion moments and contributions from documentary filmmakers, live-action directors, and photographers for what Garrett describes as “an expansive, unprescribed and spontaneous - but also rooted in something real, not entirely random.”

Speaking about the creation process, Garrett said, “It was important that we worked with artists from all corners of the world,” and that she “wanted each collaborator to have the space to really pull the film in a new direction.”

Each director received a bespoke brief from Garrett, centered around common themes of nature and togetherness. They were encouraged to bring their own unique style to their section, with Isabel adding that she “tried to choose directors whose work felt tonally connected in some way. There’s a big range of styles in there but they’re all quite delicate and sensitive, and in each one you can really feel the hand of the artist.”

Blinkink directors Sam Gainsborough, Will Wightman, and Zach Tavel feature among the 28 selected filmmakers, alongside frequent Blinkink collaborators Daniel Quirke and Studio Gruff. Josef Byrne serves as executive producer alongside Alex Halley as head of production and Alexander Handschuh as producer.

The track premiered at the Lightroom in King’s Cross on January 22 as part of Coldplay’s A Film for The Future project, a 44-minute film that combines visuals for each track on Moon Music. Blinkink director Raman Djafari’s Annie Award-nominated and UK Music Video Award-winning music video for “feelslikeimfallinginlove” also featured.

Garrett concluded, “I hope it’s a hopeful video. To me the track is searching for a light and finding it… there is so much darkness everywhere, but there is still beauty and hope... in little, unexpected moments.”
