Bizarre Teaser Trailer Drops for ‘A Minecraft Movie’

Reaction is mixed for the big-screen adaptation of Mojang’s best-selling video game, directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jason Momoa; film hits theaters April 4, 2025.

A first look teaser trailer has finally dropped for A Minecraft Movie, the eagerly (or cautiously?) awaited live-action adaptation of one of history’s best-selling video games. Fan reaction seems mixed… at best. Especially with Jack Black as the iconic Steve.

Black stars alongside Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) as Dawn, Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Mozart in the Jungle) as Henry, Jason Momoa (Aquaman) as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Emma Myers (Wednesday) as Natalie, and Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus).

In the film, four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) directs. Warner Bros. develops in partnership with Legendary Pictures and Vertigo.

Mary Parent, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Roy Lee produce. Jill Messick is receiving a posthumous producing credit. Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Mojang will also produce alongside Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts, who serve as executive producers.

The “cubical” VFX are created by Halon Entertainment, Sony Imageworks, SPI, and Wētā FX. Oscar-winning Dan Lemmon (The Jungle Book, The Batman) serves as VFX supervisor.

A Minecraft Movie is slated to release April 4, 2025
