Bill Plympton Announces New In-Person Animation Course

The two-time Oscar nominee and Annie Award Lifetime Achievement winner returns to the classroom for an eight-week course, to be held at his studio in Chelsea, NYC from March 10-April 28; a remote option is also available.

Bill Plympton’s new 8-week animation course runs March 10 – April 28, 2025.

Festival veteran, two-time Oscar nominee, and Annie Award Lifetime Achievement winner Bill Plympton recently took to Instagram to announce his return to the classroom with a new Plympton Animation School 8-week course. The class will be held in-person at his studio in Chelsea, NYC, and a recorded version of the class will be available online to fans who are unable to commute. The eight, 90-minute live classes will run from March 10-April 28.

Plympton last offered a set of remote Master Classes during the dreaded pandemic. Now that his latest animated feature Slide is finished and headed to MOMI, teaching is back on the agenda. By the end of the course, students can expect to have their own original animated short that can be entered in festivals or posted on YouTube.

In the class, Plympton will draw, show films, critique work, and speak on his vast industry experience. Topics to be covered include:

  • Introduction: concepts, ideas, influences, financing
  • Creating an outline & characters
  • Fundraising, budget & schedule
  • Storyboarding
  • Layouts & backgrounds
  • Animation & coloring
  • Editing, music & voices
  • Festivals, distribution, contracts, promotion

As a special treat, all students in the class will receive two signed pieces of original animation art from one of Plympton’s animated films.

The package of eight classes is $1,500 and is limited to 25 seats. All students will receive a diploma after the last class.

Student hopefuls who cannot attend live classes can view recorded sessions for $1,000. An individual portfolio review by Plympton can also be selected for $300.

Sign up for the classes by sending an e-mail to studio@plymptoons.com(link sends e-mail). Payment can be made via Zelle or Venmo.
