BBC Three Greenlights ‘Galaxy Dance,’ First Animated Project in 20 Years

The upcoming one-off, which touts both animation and live-action elements, takes place during Eurovision 2989, with both alien and human contestants competing for a prize that may save Earth from extinction.

BBC Three has officially greenlit Galaxy Dance, the channel’s first animated project in two decades, according to Deadline. The last animated offering was Monkey Dust, a sketch series from Harry Thompson and Shaun Pye that finished in 2005.

The upcoming one-off, which touts both animation and live-action elements, takes place during Eurovision 2989, with both alien and human dance contestants competing for a prize that may save Earth from extinction.

Galaxy Dance stars Liam Bixby (Wreck), Lisa Dwyer Hogg (Dance First), and Mukamajulé Michelo (The Lovers). Ultan Courtney serves as creator and director.

BBC Controller of Youth Audiences Fiona Campbell said, “All credit to director and originator Ultan Courtney who has taken his creation through an IBC and Epic Games accelerator programme to prove his concept and appeal as a commission for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.”

Developed in Unreal Engine, the project is produced by HaZimation and was created in Northern Ireland with support from Northern Ireland Screen. Paula Crickard produces. HaZimation’s new 3DCG animated action-thriller Max Beyond, was just released on digital platforms.

Galaxy Dance is expected to debut around Eurovision.
