BAFTA-winning director Nina Gantz’s stop-motion ‘Wander to Wonder’ takes home the award for Best Animation at the LA-based short film festival.
Los Angeles-based HollyShorts Film Festival recently wrapped its 20th edition, with winners announced and honored at the closing night festivities on August 18. Established in 2005, the program has grown into a premier platform for independent filmmakers worldwide. As an Academy Awards-qualifying festival in four categories, HollyShorts presents a diverse selection of innovative short films across various genres.
In the Oscar-qualifying category of “Best Animation” Wander to Wonder, by BAFTA-winning animation director Nina Gantz (France/Netherlands/Belgium), took home the award.
The film follows Mary, Billybud, and Fumbleton, three miniature human actors who perform in an 80s kids TV series called Wander to Wonder. When the creator bites the dust, the trio are left to their own devices in the abandoned studio. Hungry and increasingly losing their minds, the paranoid, anxious trio starts to churn out bizarro episodes that mirror their unhinged conditions.
The award for “Best VFX” (non-Oscar qualifying category) was won by Robin Takao D’Oench’s Fireline.
The film follows an incarcerated wildland firefighter, who, after being denied parole, desperately tries to call his daughter while his crew combats a fire.
