Boards for my New Project

I've just finished the final storyboards for my new animated short. I drew them out at 1/2 an inch by 1 and a half inches. I've attached a jpeg to show the insanity.

I've also compiled them into an animatic, which you can check out here

It's an 11mb Quicktime file.

I had posted a previous animatic last year, but this is the final version. Now I'm moving on to layouts.

Being on a dialup these big downloads are killer, but this one was worth it. Love the soundtrack. Some of your camera angles are very Orson Welles/Citizen Kane like. Scene transitions are great too, but suppose those will change in the final version. Especially liked that one towards the end that slides up the screen. Make sure you post updates as your project progresses.

Phacker- Thanks for checking it out. That's great that some of it reminded you of Orson Welles work. I try to get a strong readable light source in each of the shots, as well as a variety of angles.

The transition at the end that has the panel sliding up is supposed to represent a cross dissolve. I put the animatic together in Flash, so I wasn't able to adjust the transparency of the jpegs.

I'll definitely be posting more as the project progresses. I'm aiming to complete it by July of next year. Thanks again. :D

Nice work Colby. I like the build up of the music. Just a few questions. Is it a trailer for a more expanded story that you are working on? Why did you draw the boards so small? And do all three stories take place in the same place in the same time?

I'd love to see it when you are done with it.

...we must all face a choice, between what is right... and what is easy."

don't know if you care of not, but if you make your jpg a symbol you should be able to easily alpha out the symbol as it's moving up.

Looks like a cool project! Is this a preview/trailer for a project you want to pitch?

I kind of liked the way it was done. I may use that as a transition in something I work up in the future.

Thanks guys for the compliments. :)

The trailer is designed to just be a portfolio piece showing a wide range of backgrounds and animation. There won't be a pitch, I just want to wow people with it. I'm hoping to be finished for Comic-Con next year, but as you can tell its a lot of work.

The Traun story was created over the past 7 years between myself and a few friends. Some friends of mine would come up with an hour long piece of music and a story, then me and another friend would storyboard the whole thing out and shoot it on slides. Then the music would be performed live in a club with the slideshow. Some of the scenes were acted out as well. There was only one performance of each of the 3 chapters.

Ape- All the stories take place in the same universe with the same characters. It's similar to Star Wars. I drew the boards small so that they would all fit on one page of my sketchbook. I like being able to see the entire thing at once. It also forces me to keep the design of each scene simple.

Bluehickey- Thanks for the help. I don't know why I thought that wasn't possible

Phacker- Cool. The transition reminds me of curtains rising.

Here's the website for my friend that's done most of the music http://people.ucsc.edu/~dav19pt5/

And my other friend who collaborated on the artwork. http://people.ucsc.edu/~dav19pt5/rice510/SPLASH.htm

Curtain rising...exactly. I like it, just watched it again and I still like that transition.

Citizen Unicron that looks to be an awsome trailer when you finish it. The music fit's it well too. I cant' belive you did those boards in your sketch book. I do comps before i go to boards that look something similar to what you did just to get the layout. But wow.

Really impressive.

Is this how you do all your boards? Or just for this project?

The man is unstoppable!!!!

Thanks Damge and Dan :) .

I worked out most of the boards at a slightly larger size before I drew them on the final page. This is the smallest I've ever drawn boards. I usually draw them small, so I can see the flow of the movie at a quick glance.

I'll post some layout drawings some time in June.
