How Best to Hire an Animation Rep (for a studio)

By Alfa22 | Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 5:38am

Hello,

Does anyone know of any websites or other resources that can put a studio in touch with a rep (i.e., those that charge commission to land new projects for the studio?). Any specific reps that anyone has experience with?

Thanks for the feedback!

Hey Alfa,

At Lost Boys we experimented with reps over a 5 year period...

We specialized in VFX and 3D Animation for Commercials so this may be a little different than what you are looking for but here's my experience anyways...

We had reps in New York, Chicago, LA and China. Some worked straight commision and some required a monthly retainer to assist in covering their costs while setting up meetings etc...

All in all it was a completely unproductive... I learned that as much as I hated sales the only reliable method was for myself and key staff to do the meetings ourselves.

Best to get as many opinions as possible. Perhaps it was just that our style of work/business structure was less conducive to third party representation. Although, I have spoken to a few other similiar sized (under 20 staff) shops and have heard the same stories.

Mark,

great advice this. i have thought about this situation myself being a studio with under 20 people and a tight pipeline.

i always find it more useful to deal with clients directly, sometimes it causes a lot of anxiety because you are fighting for the work yourself. but i think it leads to ultimately more fruitful relationships.

Does this change if the studio functions on contract basis vs. creating original contact and then pitching?

I assume a rep would be able to find contract-based work fairly easily?

would depend on your arrangement i reckon. the agent could ask for a % of the gross or monies you might make on the pitch

I guess my question is more surrounding whether the difficulties experienced with reps deal with finding clients for original studio work, or rather finding contract-based work.
