Opinions on this subject are scattered liberally throughout the forum. It has been covered in many threads.
Good God, not this stupid thread again.
Didn't we just discuss this topic 5 minutes ago,
and 5 minutes before that?
Mods, will you please finally make a 2D vs. 3D sticky thread and delete any other similar threads that these newbies create.
I'm sorry. I'm just finally getting really sick of these. $&%#*#@$^$&(!!!!!!!
Maybe. 2D animation is indeed getting scarcer and scarcer. But I think as long as enough people still like it it will never totally die.
In don't even get WHY. 3D animation takes so much longer to set up and render.
To quote Brad Bird:
"The person who thought of doing movies this way is CRAZY!:
Go back like 2 weeks and find a thread discussing this. I probably contributed something witty or relavent or both. I'm with Harvey on this one. I'm a little talked out on it.
But don't let that stop all the new guys/gals from discussing it if you want.

A-blinkin'-men!
Its been debated endlessly, and its back in the early pages of this forum should anyone really want to know the opinions on it. And its for a school project no less. C'mon Houndoom--do your reasearch--its there for you to read through.
 I'm getting tired of people with flimsy, uninformed, biased, obviously un-researched, thesis ideas for their papers and beg us to do the work for them. If people came here with some information in hand, where they did their research, what books and websites they're using as material, and actually looked like they did some more research beyond taking the first 5 results from Google, or "I just noticed in the theaters yesterday", they might find a much more lively and informative discussion starting up.
And since when does asking for strangers (who may or may not know anything about 'the business') for their opinions count as a good way to do a research paper? For all you know we're a bunch of fifth graders who don't watch anything but old tapes of Betty Boop. I miss the library being the main resource in information.
Sorry, Houndoom, but you're the second in as many days asking a similar, "help me do my homeowork" question. If you still want opinions there's a search tab for the forums. You'll find more varied opinions than you can shake a stick at.
I think you're a little too hard. I understand it's annoying to discuss one and the same issue all the time, but in my opinion this is a forum not only for animators or people who have got experiences in animation or the business. I think it's great and important, that many people who don't have a clue about all this but nevertheless are interessted in animation, can find a place where they can directly communicate with professional animators and others who are familiar with the buisness. Maybe you've even got the chance to fascinate some of them and show that animation isn't as easy as many uninformed think or put other clichés straight.
Of course that doesn't mean to repeat all discussions, just to refer to the old threads without being pissed--- ;)
Sorry, my main beef isn't with repeat threads, just lazy students (or at least the impression that they're lazy students). Repeat threads happen all the time.
Just use "Search" next to "New Posts" and you'll find a number of pretty good threads on people's opinions on the death/rebirth/never went away-ness of 2D. Also, be sure to search for Disney. You may also want to get a hold of Miracle_Sets (a member here). He just recently started a 2D studio.
There, now I've helped out more than I said I would. Damn your good nature, Bandita! ;)
But does this really require a discussion thread:
My opinion is that a lot more 3D animated films are being produced than 2D animated films, but television shows are still mostly being produced using 2D animation
Yes, and it's my opinion that the sky is blue although sometimes it's black and sometimes it's rainy.
It's my opinion that dogs bark although cats don't.
Well, friggin' duuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh. You answered your own question, Houndoom, simply by opening your eyes and watching TV or the movie listings. I suppose I could be a total bastard and argue that, no, there aren't 3D movies in the theaters, but I think I'll let you have this one.
Next topic ...

I have to share this sentiment somewhat. There's an awful lot of "learned helplessness" coming out of western schooling and the Internet isn't helping things all that much.
For a tool that puts so much information at a persons fingertips, its a wonder that a LOT people haven't become skilled at finding that info.
The reason for that is that they've become LAZY.
The Internet actually makes info even MORE suspect because cross-referencing it becomes very difficult.
If one wants to form a thesis based on opinions, they can make them all up on their own, because opinions need not be supported by facts.
Facts, on the other hand, require substantiation otherwise they are valueless.
I think it's great and important, that many people who don't have a clue about all this but nevertheless are interessted in animation, can find a place where they can directly communicate with professional animators and others who are familiar with the buisness.

You're right - it is nice to have access to people in the industry. And if our new friend had asked a specific question about the topic after having looked at the old threads and not found what he (or she) was looking for, then I'm sure the response would have been significantly different. But like so many before him (or her), this person registered, posted a question, and is now undoubtely waiting for responses. I'm inclined to think that once this paper is complete, we'll never hear from this individual again.
Yes, there could have been less annoyance in responses to the question (the only reason mine is relatively polite is that I heavily edited what I'd initially typed), but when someone can't even be bothered to look in the archives for the information they're interested in, it's really no surprise when people get aggravated.
Well put, DSB.
I'm sorry if I have annoyed anyone.I had no idea this thread has been posted up again and again, this is sort of the first time I am using this. I have studied throughout my topic, and continuing to do so, this is just a part of the project, and it might not even be in it. I have many ohter sub topics for it like budget cost, countries, preferenc, labour, time, etc. I was planning to use only the poll for a view of what people thought, sort of like a survey, and since some of you are professionals at the animation business I thought this poll would be effective. I only wanted to hear your opinions out of my curiosity, because you can't really create a project out of people's responses, you need facts. Sorry if I have annoyed anyone.
Facts, on the other hand, require substantiation otherwise they are valueless.
I'll do you one better. When facts have no substance backing them up, they're not facts anymore. They're just waste products of the males in the bovine species. ;)
About this thread. I imagine that if the internet were around in the late 20's there would have been multiple threads about "Are silent movies dead" with the likes of Charlie Chaplain, Lillian Gish, and Howard Hughes making very impassioned posts every few weeks. A similar discussion would have ensued in the early 50's discussing how television just might kill movies.
The thing is, 2D animation is an artform. It doesn't become obsolete like technology. For this reason, 2D will and should be arond for a long time yet. Hopefully forever. I just hope it doesn't become a lost artform like the silent movies. :(
Hey Ken,
Would you mind doing an animation questionnaire for me for a school project? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
This debate, having seen it on a weekly basis for the last 2 years is one that cannot be won. We might as well argue which is better, Chritianity or Islam.
By the way... WHat graphic tablet is the best? Mouhahahahaha (Don't answer that. It too is always asked in this forum)
Cheers

It probably will be - and the information you seek is elsewhere on this site, in multiple threads. Help yourself, and good luck with your report.
heh, well,i for one am kinda glad tradish animation is in the shadows and is rare in cinema, because it kinda starts to give it that rare edge now,and when the traditional animations are seen the may be respected more, kinda like stop motion is now.
could u imagine a world of just 3d animation?..for a long period of time i mean?who knows....
