I want to enter a short in contests next year, and then I want to sell it thru my company on DVD's as a bonus feature after it (hopefully) wins some type of award.
Legally, is there any reason I wouldn't be able to do that? In other words, would entering it in contests pose future problems in that regard?
Thanks!
Hi, what contest are you thinking about entering? It might say (somewhere in the small print) that your film will become property of who ever it is you are sending it to e.g. a TV station. I don't know if a statement like this actually means anything more than that they do not have to return the opy of your film but it's probably best to check it out...just incase. Other than that, I don't see any reason why there would be a problem with you selling copies. I was thinking of doing something similar myself.
Good luck!
As best I understand it, you would just have to check the rules of the film festival(s) that you would like to enter. Each one has it's own "particulars"... some are more strict than others.
Hope that helps.

...for the input. I really appreciate it.
So which contest are you going into? I'll keep a look out for your work! :)
.....it should be finished up by march/april and I think April is the deadline for siggraph if I'm not mistaken. I figure I'll research some contests deadlines that are on or after April and see how things go!
Sounds like you have everything sorted! Good luck! Hope to see your work in the future. :)
Hi thampson,
As far as I know, you shouldn't have any problems making and selling your own DVD's. If you see the phrase "non-exclusive" on the entry form, then you are only granting the festival the right to show your work, not own your work. You still maintain the rights to your animation and can do with it as you please.
Just make sure you read all the regulations and rules to the festival very carefully.

I guess I gotta read all the fine print. :o)
Hey thampson,
I just noticed that you're located in Crofton, MD. I live in Maryland, too. Are you a student? Do you go to any local art school?
