The Nelvana co-founder and longtime kid’s animation creator will reflect on his 4 decades in the industry and explore the evolution, current challenges, and outlook for Canadian animation; set for June 10 at Mifa.
Michael Hirsh, Nelvana co-founder and longtime Canadian children’s programming producer and author, will reflect on his four decades in the animation industry as Mifa’s Keynote Speaker on June 10.
“I have attended the Annecy Festival since its inception,” said Hirsh. “It is a great honor to be the Keynote Speaker at this momentous occasion. I look forward to sharing my insights and meeting with old and new colleagues.”
In his upcoming keynote, Hirsh will explore the evolution, current challenges, and outlook for Canadian animation.
Joined by Christian Davin, President of Cartoon, the conversation will delve into the founding of Nelvana in 1971; its major impact on the growth of the Canadian (and more expansive) worldwide animation sector; the creation of Studio Ellipse in partnership with Nelvana; the company’s transformation over the years; and the broader consolidation of the industry. Hirsh will also share with Davin his perspective on the future of streaming and the opportunities it presents for non-U.S. players.
Prior to the event, Hirsh will sign copies of his debut book, “Animation Nation: How We Built a Cartoon Empire” on June 9.
The book details how a meeting with George Lucas led to the genesis of Nelvana, which not only positioned Canada as a creator of children's programming, but also made an international impact, establishing a new model for producing children's cartoons.
