Madame Tutli-Putli Takes Worldwide Short Film Fest

NFB's new stop-motion short, MADAME TUTLI-PUTLI, won the top animated prize at Toronto's Worldwide Short Film Festival. Directors Chris Lavis and Mciek Szczerbowski were awarded the C.O.R.E Digital Pictures Award for Best Animated Short, which comes with a $5,000 cash prize. By winning the festival, the short is now eligible for the Academy Award and Genie Award. In the film, a young woman takes a strange train ride on which she must confront her demons.

HBO Calls for Shorts for ABFF

Home Box Office announced it is now accepting entries for its 10th Annual HBO Short Film Award at Film Life's 2007 American Black Film Festival (ABFF). The competition honors the writing and directing talents of Black filmmakers. A grand prize of $20,000 will be presented by HBO at the ABFF, taking place in Los Angeles, Oct. 25-29, 2007.

The HBO Short Film Award has been presented as part of the ABFF's competitive film showcase since its inception in 1998. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of HBO as founding and title sponsor of the festival.

Southern Circuit provides independent filmmakers living in the U.S. with the paid opportunity to tour throughout the Southeastern U.S. screening their work for new audiences and engaging those audiences in discussions about the work and its creation. Filmmakers selected for the 2007-2008 Southern Circuit will receive: a $300 fee for each screening on the tour (total screening fees average between $1,800 and $2,400); paid travel expenses (domestic airfare and car rental) for the tour; per diem for meals and lodging expenses.

Happy Feet & Danish Poet Top Animated Oscar Honors

The Oscar animation winners offered a few surprises as the top animation awards went to HAPPY FEET for Best Animated Feature and the indie 2D short THE DANISH POET (NFB) by Torill Kove won for Best Animated Short tonight (Feb. 25, 2007) during the 79th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Echoing its earlier awards at the VES Awards, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST scored the big win for Best Visual Effects. Taking the stage to accept from ILM were John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson and Allen Hall.

THE 2006 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED SHORT FILMS program, distributed by Magnolia Pictures, opened at #44 on the box office chart, with $128,569 on 38 screens for a per-screen average of $3,383. Oscar Shorts to Screen at Academy

To kick off Oscar Week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present "Shorts!," a program featuring the 10 Academy Award-nominated films in the animated and live-action short film categories, on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at 7:30 pm at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The program, hosted by Academy Award-winning producer-director Taylor Hackford, will feature onstage discussions with the nominated filmmakers (subject to availability).
