Toshiba To Phase Out HD DVD

Following the news that Wal-Mart and Netflix would only carry rival product Blu-ray, Toshiba will end the format war and discontinue its line of HD DVD players.

"While we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, based on its technological advancements and the value and quality inherent in our player offerings, recent market developments have led us to the decision to choose new and different paths," said Yoshi Uchiyama, group vice president of Toshiba's Digital A/V Marketing Group.

The HD format war may have confused consumers, but it was a gift as far as providing a wide assortment of animation eye candy this year. Plus there was a treasure trove of catalog titles on DVD, too, capped by Acme Filmworks' invaluable ANIMATION SHOW OF SHOW collection of shorts. Each of the 18 volumes features three films and sells for $5. The three box sets include six of those volumes and sell for $30. Fans can also purchase all three box sets for $90. Foster's a Hot Topic for the Holidays

Bloo, Cheese, Eduardo and all of the other denizens of FOSTER'S HOME FOR IMAGINARY FRIENDS will have a new home this December at Hot Topic locations nationwide. Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and the retailer are setting up a chain-wide boutique for the product line based on the Emmy Award-winning series and all 693 Hot Topic stores will feature products including apparel, accessories, slippers, room décor, jewelry, hair accessories, stationery, DVDs and more.

300 Captures First High-Def Disc Awards

Warner Home Video's 300 dominated the first ever High-Def Disc Awards, held Dec. 4 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, taking High-Def Title of the Year (Blu-ray Disc) and Best Bonus Feature honors (HD DVD).

The High-Def Disc Awards dinner was part of High-Def 2.0, a one-day conference presented by HOME MEDIA MAGAZINE in cooperation with THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER and the Entertainment Merchants Assn.

A panel of critics and bloggers determined the best titles in 11 categories.

Goofy Hooks Up with National Treasure Sequel

Instead of opening with ENCHANTED on Nov. 21, the new 2D Goofy short from Walt Disney Animation Studios, HOW TO HOOK UP YOUR HOME THEATER, will make its theatrical debut with NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS on Dec. 21.

This is surprising, considering that Kevin Lima's ENCHANTED opens with 10 minutes of 2D animation of the fairy tale world.

Transformers Debuts as Top Selling DVD and HD DVD

TRANSFORMERS is the year's top-selling week-one DVD with North American sales reaching 8.3 million units for Paramount Home Ent. since its debut on Oct. 16. The Michael Bay blockbuster is also the best-selling DVD day one for the year with more than 4.5 million units sold on Tuesday. Additionally, TRANSFORMERS has sold more than 190,000 HD DVDs in its first week, making it the fastest and best-selling week-one release on either high definition format, as well as the best-selling HD DVD ever.

Casshern Arrives on DVD in New Director's Cut

Warner Home Video (WHV) has entered a multi-year, exclusive worldwide home video distribution deal with United Media (aka United Feature Syndicate Inc.), Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates and Lee Mendelson Film Prods. for PEANUTS, the acclaimed syndicated comic strip that generated highly successful television programs revered by generations of viewers globally. The distribution deal includes the PEANUTS library and original made-for-videos for home video and new media distribution based on the PEANUTS work of Charles M. Schulz.

Unrated Day Watch to Explode from Fox on DVD

Sony Home Ent. Takes Over Sony Wonder

Sony Pictures Home Ent. will be taking over control of Sony Wonder from its sister company, Sony BMG Music Ent., reports VARIETY. Sony Wonder vp of development Steve Okin will have the title of vp of family entertainment. His duties will be to develop and acquire non-feature family programming.

Moving from SONY BMG, Olga Economou will become exec director of Sony Wonder sales.

WHV Takes a Bite of Appleseed: Ex Machina

Warner Home Video (WHV) has secured worldwide home video and television rights (excluding Japan) to the new CG anime, APPLESEED: EX MACHINA, the follow-up to APPLESEED, produced by John Woo (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II, FACE/OFF) and directed by Shinji Aramaki (APPLESEED, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS). APPLESEED: EX MACHINA is slated for a 2008 release and will be presented in a high-definition format disc, as well as standard definition DVD. A two-disc collectors set, containing extra bonus materials, will also be released simultaneously.

HBO Elevates Four Corp. Officers With Albrecht Departure

HBO has a new lineup of four top corporate officers today (June 5, 2007) to replace Chris Albrecht, the ceo who resigned last month. Bill Nelson heads the group as chairman/ceo. Richard Plepler, Eric Kessler and Hal Akselrad have been elevated to the new title of co-presidents, all with specific duties at the pay cable channel and all report to Nelson. Time Warner chairman/ceo Dick Parsons and president/coo Jeff Bewkes made the announcement.

Dead Man's Chest Takes Home Booty at MTV Movie Awards

On June 3, 2007, the MTV Movie Awards had at its golden popcorn statuettes with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST taking home the most booty. Little Princess Coming to Home Textiles

TV-Loonland has announced that a home textiles deal for the highly acclaimed preschool show LITTLE PRINCESS has been agreed with Belgium based S.A. Belltex N.V. This deal follows the recent award LITTLE PRINCESS received as Best Animated Series at the Stuttgart Animation Festival in April.
