The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the eight films being considered for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 74th Academy Awards. Fifteen-minute clip reels from each of the following films will be screened for the Visual Effects Award nominating committee on February 6. The members will then nominate three for Oscar consideration.
The films are:
A. I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
BLACK HAWK DOWN
CATS AND DOGS
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS
HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE
JURASSIC PARK III
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
PEARL HARBOR
The nominees will be announced on Tuesday, February 12, at 5:30 am PST. The Academy Awards will be presented on March 24, 2002 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. With so many great visual effects films in 2001, it may be difficult for the Academy to pick just three. But if pre-Oscar honors have any sway over the committee, then THE LORD OF THE RINGS will be a likely nominee, having recently won the AFI Film of the Year and Digital Effects Artist of the Year awards.
