Stephen Chow, once the director of THE GREEN HORNET, has apparently dropped out of the project all-together, reports MTV's SPLASH PAGE.
SpoilerTV discovered an open casting call for the part of Kato, which Chow was set to play. Producers say they are looking for a non-specific Asian man to play the part, and he no longer has to have martial arts experience.
Michel Gondry is on-board to direct. In the serials, Kato was a skilled fighter, but not necessarily a martial arts master. However, after the Bruce Lee portrayal, traditionally Kato has been an expert in martial arts.
Rogen, who is the title character and co-wrote the script, has said previously that the film will be a departure from the HORNET people have seen before, and will be an origins story.
UPDATE: Sony has confirmed that Chow has dropped out of the project. The studio said in a statement, "There was a mutual and amicable decision by both sides to move on. We are out now to cast a new Kato and remain fully committed to Michel Gondry's exciting vision for the film, which will begin production this September."
