Sage Steele Joins Voice Cast of DailyWire+ Animated Series ‘Mr. Birchum’

Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele has replaced Candace Owens as the voice of Deena in The Daily Wire’s upcoming animated sitcom Mr. Birchum, created by Adam Carolla. Owens exited the conservative news website last month over irreconcilable political differences with co-founder Ben Shapiro.

“When I got the call from Adam and the Daily Wire team to be part of Mr. Birchum, it was a no-brainer for me!” Steele said to Deadline. “I’m a huge fan of everyone involved and am honored to be included in such a powerhouse lineup of comedians. In this insane cultural moment, it’s more important than ever to speak the truth, even when it’s unpopular. Mr. Birchum does this in such a hilarious fashion, and I’m thrilled to be part of such a fun, unapologetic project.”

Steele joins a voice cast that includes Megyn Kelly, Brett Cooper, Carolla, Roseanne Barr, Danny Trejo, Rob Riggle, Patrick Warburton, Tyler Fischer, Alonzo Bodden, Kyle Dunnigan, and Jay Mohr.

Serving as DailyWire+’s first animated comedy, the series follows Mr. Birchum (Carolla) as he navigates life as a Junior High teacher and father with the help of multiple fantasy mentors, such as the ghost of his gym teacher, Coach Murphy (Mohr) and childhood frozen dinner icon Burly Man (Warburton).

Birchum is befuddled by his gaming streamer son, Eddie (Dunnigan), annoyed at his selfie-taking, snowflake students and is constantly at war with the school district’s appointed “J.E.D.I.” (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion officer) Mr. Karponzi (Fischer). But his best buddy, auto-shop teacher Don Gage (Bodden), his wife Wendi (Kelly), and step-daughter Jeanie (Cooper) have his back, along with his mentors. He’ll even get an assist from sick-and-tired, wishes she were retired, Principal Bortles (Barr) when competing with Navy buddies against his Army nemesis Gunderson (Riggle), and reformed gang member Switchblade (Trejo) lends a tattooed hand building a house for charity.

Mike Lynch serves as head writer, with additional episodes written by Byron Kavanagh and Mark Hoffmeier. David Coleman produces for Daily Wire alongside Dallas Sonnier for Bonfire Legend, with Daily Wire’s Jeremy Boreing, Ben Shapiro, and Caleb Robinson executive producing. Chassy Media is the physical production company, with Carolla and Mike August acting as executive producers for Chassy Media. Nate Adam showruns and executive produces.

Mr. Birchum premieres May 12 on DailyWire+.
