‘Netflix Family Summer’ Animation Highlights

The streamer shares a recap of upcoming movies and series, including the 3DCG animated feature, Nimona, premiering June 30, and new seasons of Sonic Prime and The Dragon Prince arriving next month.

Summer is here, and school is out, and just in case it’s too hot to go outside, check out Netflix’s recap of “What to Watch” from the “Netflix Family Summer” collection featuring a trove of animation with new and returning series and movies. The 3DCG animated feature, Nimona, leads the lineup, coming to the streamer on June 30.

July highlights include the first feature film based on the global Miraculous franchise, Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie, which launches July 28; Sonic Prime returns with new episodes July 13; and the streamer’s first original animated series from Africa, Supa 4 premieres July 20.

Here’s the rundown:

June 30:

Nimona – A 3DCG animated feature based on the National Book Award-nominated, New York Times bestselling graphic novel by ND Stevenson, the movie follows a knight framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the titular shapeshifter who sets out to help him prove his innocence.

July 10

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie - Based on the bestselling book series, this movie tells the story of George and Harold, two overly imaginative pranksters, who hypnotize their principal into thinking he's a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

StoryBots: Answer Time Season 2 - The 'Bots are back to answer more curious questions from kids, like how do bubbles form? Why does the moon change shape? And how is glass made?

July 13

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – In DreamWorks Animation’s adventure-comedy Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll, and he’s burnt through eight of his nine lives. So, he sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.

Sonic Prime Season 2 - The action-packed adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog go into overdrive when a run-in with Dr. Eggman results in a literal universe-shattering event. Desperate to piece his prime reality back together and save his old friends, Sonic races through the Shatterverse, discovering strange worlds and enlisting new friends in an epic adventure of a lifetime!

July 20

Supa Team 4 Season 1 - Four teen girls living in the neo-futuristic African city of Lusaka are recruited by a retired secret agent still committed to saving the world... even if it’s on a budget. In their journey from schoolgirls tackling homework to undercover superheroes fending off supervillains, they’re transformed from a motley crew of friends into Supa Team 4!

July 24

Dew Drop Diaries Season 1 – The series follows a group of three-inch tall family fairies — or as they’re known in the fairy world Dew Drops — who live inside teensy fairy houses on brownstone balcony gardens in “The Big City” and are assigned to human families to “help out.”

July 27

The Dragon Prince Season 5 - The search for Aaravos' prison sends Rayla, Callum, and Ezran on an epic journey across land and sea while conflict roils the Sunfire elves' kingdom.

July 28

Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie - The film follows an ordinary teenager Marinette, whose life in Paris goes superhuman when she becomes Ladybug. Bestowed with magical powers of creation, Ladybug must unite with her opposite, Cat Noir, to save Paris as a new villain unleashes chaos on the city.

August 1

Despicable Me 1 & 2 – The first two chapters of Illumination’s hit animated film franchise about a former supervillain turned secret agent named Gru and his yellow-colored Minions.

August 7

Gabby’s Dollhouse Season 8 - Gabby and her best pal Pandy Paws, meet fairies, find treasure, and go on wild adventures inside her super-special dollhouse.

August 17

My Dad the Bounty Hunter Season 2 – The animated action-comedy series follows close-knit siblings Lisa and Sean, who stow away on their dad’s latest work trip, hoping to get some quality time together finally. Little do they know Dad’s been keeping a secret from them — he’s actually the toughest bounty hunter in the galaxy!

August 18

The Monkey King – The movie, an action-packed family comedy, follows a charismatic Monkey and his magical fighting Stick on an epic quest for victory over 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King, and Monkey’s greatest foe of all — his own ego! Along the way, a young village girl challenges his self-centered attitude and shows him that even the smallest pebble can have a big effect on the world.
