Sony Pictures confirms Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, is moving forward despite perceptions that Dragon Tattoo performed poorly at the box office.

Despite a less than stellar box office performance for Sony’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the studio is moving ahead with plans for the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and Steven Zaillian is still working on the script as planned. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, director David Fincher still hasn’t decided whether to return, but stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are both already signed up for the other two films in the popular book series.

Based on Stieg Larsson's international bestseller, the $90 million film has grossed $60 million since its December 20 U.S. release, but moviegoers are enthusiastic -- it received an A from audience-survey firm CinemaScore – and Dragon Tattoo appears to be holding up well over time as it trudges toward the $100 million mark.
