In its first collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios, Cinesite’s team delivered 108 minutes of animation for the original series set in futuristic Lagos, Nigeria; 6-episode series and the behind-the-scenes documentary are now streaming on Disney+
Leading VFX and animation studio Cinesite delivered 108 minutes of animation for the six-part limited animated series Iwájú, marking the first time the studio has worked with Walt Disney Animation Studios on animated content. Cinesite began working on the series in 2021, shortly after the project’s announcement.
“There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to Iwájú,” commented Cinesite’s supervising producer Joel MacDonald. “For one, it’s an entirely new, original story inventively set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. Secondly, working with the legendary Walt Disney Animation Studios and the fresh, new voices of Kugali is truly a first-of-its-kind experience, not just for Cinesite but for all three collaborative partners. The Cinesite crew has worked hard to continually raise the quality bar, and working with Disney Animation is testament to everyone’s efforts. An original animated series, Iwájú is set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The coming-of-age story follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.

Kugali filmmakers, director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyek create a unique journey for viewers, delivering a world ripe with unique visual elements and technological advancements. The series is produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen, with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson. Marlon West is the VFX supervisor from Disney Animation on the project.
Supervising producer Joel MacDonald with Ellen Poon (VFX supervisor) and Jason Ryan (animation director) led Cinesite’s 559-person team across its Montreal, Vancouver, and London studios with support from Adel Abada (associate VFX supervisor), Andrew Gartner and Stéphanie Roy (CG supervisors).
All Six Episodes of Iwájú are now streaming on Disney+ along with a behind-the-scenes documentary, Iwájú: A Day Ahead, produced by ABC News Studios.
