Family animated tentpole “Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted” landed at the top of the domestic box office with a stand-out $60.4 million opening this weekend, beating the $50 million scored by Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic “Prometheus.”

Madagascar 3 also ruled overseas grossing a stellar $75.5 million for a worldwide opening of $135.9 million.
The R-rated Prometheus did more than expected on the strength of Scott's fan base and 20th Century Fox's creative marketing materials. Internationally, where it began rolling out the previous weekend to impressive numbers, Prometheus came in number two, grossing $39.2 million for a total of $91.5 million and worldwide total of $141.5 million.
Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman placed number three in its second weekend out, bringing in an estimated $23 million for a domestic total of $98.5 million. Overseas, Snow White earned $24.6 million for an international total of $83.5 million and worldwide gross of $182 million.
Sony's Men in Black 3 continued to hold on well in its third weekend, coming in number four domestically with $13.5 million and besting Snow White internationally with $38.3 million. The feature has now earned $487.5 million worldwide.
Disney and Marvel’s The Avengers continues to land high up on the box office chart, placing number five with a $10.8 million. Worldwide, the super hero powered feature hit $1.4 billion over the weekend.
At the specialty box office, Marigold Hotel, from Fox Searchlight, came in sixth with a $3.2 million for a domestic total of $31 million in its sixth weekend. Internationally, the movie has earned north of $82 million.
At number seven, Lionsgate’s ensemble comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting brought in $2.7 million on its fourth weekend out for a total of $35.7 million.
In eighth place, Universal’s Battleship brought in $2.3 million for a total of $59.8 million.
Paramount’s The Dictator came in ninth place this weekend, bringing in $2.2 million million for a total of $55.2 million.
Rounding up the list at number 10, Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom grossed $1.6 on its third week out for a total of $3.8 million.
