African Animated Series to Teach Teens About Environment

A new South African animation, URBO: THE ADVENTURES OF PAX AFRICA, which airs on SABC3, is setting out to teach teens about the environment, reports Filmmaker.co.za.

The 52-episode epic is set in a future Cape Town, called iKapa, follows Pax Africa and his friends as they try and find the lost city of Urbo in an effort to save the world from rampant industrialization and dictatorship. In this word, citizens need a special card to breathe air in a pavement booth.

The overall theme is caring for your environment and a bit of a warning for where the world is going, said director Matthew Brown. The idea of a slightly underhanded, anti-consumerist angle that we have going maybe applies to a developed country but also to us because we are headed that way quite fast.

SABC commissioned Octagon CSI to produce the R8-million budgeted series. With the series limited animation, the production company produces a 24-minute episode every week.
