The Academy honors makeup effects in feature films with a special panel presentation, “Blending Makeup with Digital Arts in Film.”
HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Last night as part of its VFX Convergence craft series, the Academy honored makeup effects in feature films with a special panel presentation, “Blending Makeup with Digital Arts in Film.”
Oscar-winning digital artists and makeup artists discussed the impact of changes in post-production and color correction upon their craft, and how digital cosmetic enhancements can create dramatic visual effects.
Celebrated makeup artist Rick Baker described the creation of the various looks for Brad Pitt’s Benjamin Button in David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, as well as the makeup effects for Men in Black 3. Pioneering makeup artist Lois Burwell talked about the makeup created for Lincoln and War Horse, in addition to many of the other notable highlights of her career. Animation supervisor Hal Hickel described the role of makeup in creating many of the CG characters, including the tentacled Davy Jones, for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
Moderated by Academy Makeup Artists and Hairstylists branch governor Leonard Engelman, the evening also makeup artist Greg Cannom (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Mask), animation director Steve Preeg (Tron: Legac y, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), and visual effects supervisor Edson Williams (Les Misérables, Cloud Atlas).
The next event in the series is “From Matte Paintings to Full Environments and Set Extensions,” on Monday, April 29. Matte paintings and set extensions allow films to be enriched by creating entire worlds never built or seen before. Leading matte painters and production designers explore today’s techniques for creating these virtual worlds.
