Techvis incorporating sound

Techvis incorporating sound

Hi I am doing a thesis/dissertation on how techvis can potentially incorporate sound preparation elements as part of film preproduction.

I understand that previs is all about visualising the production prior to principle photography. My question is then how can maya be used so that the sound recordist/boomer operator can get a better sense of 'microphone placements'.

I have the idea that previs can first of all identify potential sound interferences. Also previs can determine the initial blocking within the scene, allowing the boomer operator to pre-determine the path and placement of themselves as well as the microphone in relation to the set and the rest of the crew.  And I also came up with the idea that techvis/previs can determine how close the microphone has to be inorder to get great quality audio, adequate quality audio or low quality audio.

So in order to come to a conclusion to discuss whether this would be worth looking into I am required to come up with academically sound method to present all this. I am just wondering how do I start and what are the steps necessary?

For example I am thinking about:

1. Doing a test to first record the pick up pattern of a shotgun mic and of a lavaliere mic to design into a model in maya.

2. To design a basic techvis example.

3. To then place a microphone within the scene as a previs and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this development and whether it is a worthwhile investment of effort.

How would I go about doing point 1,2 and 3?

If anyone has any ideas or contributions please reply and let me know. Your opinion and feedback can be used to aid my report and would be very much appreciated. I hope to connect and work on something with some of you in the future.

Thanks
