A list of artists who until now have had the greatest influence on me:
Arthur Rackham
The godfather of English fantasy illustration. The combination of classic English watercolour techniques and imaginative characters is unbeatable.
Brian Froud
One of Rackham's modern-day heirs. A top-notch landscape painter and fine fantasy artist. Even his kitschiest of illustrations radiate style and quality. Personally, I think he went through his strongest phase during the 80s while contributing to Henson's movies.
Rien Poortvliet
Another modern-day member of the classic school of European landscape painters. Although he rarely did fantasy illustrations, his landscapes and depictions of rural Dutch scenery are breathtaking in technique and sheer warmth. He could make even a hazy afternoon look infinitely comfy. His sketchbooks (he was an avid hunter) are noting short of amazing.
Josh Kirby
Long-time cover illustrator for Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. I love his light and surreal watercolour motifs and Rubenesque caricature style. He was also a notable portrait artist.
Tony DiTerlizzi
All of the above on a scrumptuous slice of Americana. Playful, colourful and diverse, very distinct style.

Whose example keeps you going?
I hadn't thought of Rackham since I worked in the children's department of a library in the early seventies. His illustrated works were always a favorite of the kids.
So many artists have influenced my work over the years. Starting out as a painter I think Winslow Homer had a big influence early on, but I also took inspiration from many of the modern artists of the time like Georgia O'Keefe. So I doubt I could put together a comprehensive list.
