The spam in this forum is getting a bit out of control... do we have any active moderators? I would think there'd be a way to IP block this guy or guys, and it would be great if we could get the junk cleaned out when it gets posted. Definitely takes away from this forum.
The quickest way to get them removed is to hit the little report bad post thingy
. I report as many as I can. But I don't always get to every forum.

What spam? You don't like spam? Spams the food of the gods!

I does look bad for the board when new folks visit and the first three new posts on the forums are spam.

Sorry, but we have to sleep sometime.

It's a simple matter to decline a moderator position you know you won't have time for than rather than accept it knowing you have several real-world responsibilities which prevent you from being around enough to be as on top of things as you'd like.
But that's only if your duties become an issue with people. I haven't seen a squall of complaints. Not to put you on the spot, Pat, but how often would you say you're here in a given day, and for how long? It might make more sense to have you on clean-up duty since you appear to be around more frequently and since it bugs you so much.
Sorry Scattered but I am not management material never have been. If they could just grant me rights to delete spam, I'd agree.
Sometimes I am here multiple times per day, but like Ape and Larry, I have a life too, and sometimes I am just not around. But hey you guys are here too... hit that little "caution" bad post thing guys. Someone will get to it. I don't like authority, and have never accepted it, probably why I am poor and stuggling, but I am happy with who I am.

Pat, what that bad post button does is send an email to all the moderators. So now we have to delete the spam posting here, as well as have to delete all the email notifications.
I pop in on average three or four times a day to see how things are doing, and pop in to all the forum pages. When I see spam I delete them right away. But like I said, we do have to sleep, work, eat and poop, so we can't be here 24/7. We do our best.

Ok, I just did as you suggested : hit the bad post report thingy on as many of those spam posts as I could find .
Some of those cell phone ads and other spam stuff have been sitting there on the Animator's Desktop forum for weeks. :(
"EustaceScrubb" has left the building
Well Ape is saying not to do that. On the most the boards I go to that's what's recommended, and I think he even recommended it in the past. But I am not the voice of reason, so listen to the Ape as to how to end it.

I never said "not to do that." I was explaining to you what that button does.

While we've been talking about this it just seems to be getting worse. I think Dan should talk with his tech staff, there are some php scripts out there that can be installed to minimize some of this.
I think by leaving stuff up it promotes the posting of more of the same. From what I understand from the site manager forums I belong to there has been a big upsurge in the last few months, with bots and spyders posting more and more of this stuff.

Those new image verification things you see all over are one means to limit robotic posting of spam.
And I still feel anyone that posts this stuff should be banned on their first post, it's the only way to discourage these guys. Ever seen one of them post anything except spam. I haven't.

Just replied to every spam post left up here and look at what the main page looks like. It's just the Coop and Daily Sketch forums that are clear. AWN comes off as a retail outlet for Nokia.

It probably doesn't help when you bump them, and with the exact same message. Besides keeping the threads up top, it's probably extra work to delete the complaints that no one is reading anyhow.
Some of the site management sites I go to say that if they are aware that spam isn't welcomed they back off. And some of this stuff looks like it's botted, if they don't get banned or deleted or responded to they just keep it up.
Got a better solution? Ape said he couldn't deal with all of it. And there were at least five new entries this morning.
Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.
I wasn't talking about that as an end to the spam, but related to the issues you mentioned (like clutter). We have enough growing discussion here that if the bot decides it wasn't responded to, its new retaliatory post will be lost to time.
We'll see Scattered. We've been ignoring them for the past few weeks and they've only increased. Let's see what sort of affect my cloned response had. I know it brought them all up to the top, but maybe just by hitting their email and letting them know it's not acceptable will be a deterent.

In that case, for all our sakes, I wish you the best of fortunes.
It wasn't fun on my part, it was an experiment. Took a while. If it works then all of us have to step on these suckers the minute they post. This never used to be a problem here.
Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.
They're still coming but they have slowed down a little. I really think more mod intervention would totally clean them up. And the image/graphic verification might just slow it to a stop.
There's been a few new ones since my experiment, so I am not sure responding to them does anything.

So I didn't delete any spam since last Thursday, and by Sunday night I counted over 20 spam postings. I just wanted to see how many spam postings actually get posted.

Yes, it's getting to be a problem, but I guess 20 on the large scale of web sites isn't that much. But it's more than we've seen here in a long time.
