Shaders for 2d?

hi,
i know there is toon shading and stuff for 3d programs but is something like that available for 2d or should one be content with the filters available on After Fx or Photoshop?

According to my understanding of the matter, shaders make it possible to get certain kinds of nice effects without the costs in time and memory needed for realistic rendering. In a way, they are the 3D equivalent of filters in 2D image manipulation programs.

actually that was exactly what i was looking for. while making concept art or while inking to just trying out some ways of 'readymade' looks etc.

While partially true, it's the shaders that define how a surface reacts to light and shadow, reguardless of the technique for rendering. It defines how reflective a surface is, how the specular highlights work (whether they're uniform or not like brushed metal or a polished car), what portions of the surface absorb light and how much, whether there's subsurface scattering or not (I'm not entirely sure what this is), whether it's translucent, transparent or opaque. And more. I delved a little into shader writting when I started 3D, but got overwhelmed very quickly.

Moho has a 3d/2d hybrid render engine. It's possible you could bring in any 3D models you had, render them from there, and if you don't like how the animation stuff works, composite it with footage from your favorite 2D software.

If that's not what you're talking about, could you explain more?

i was generally wondering if there were alternatives where i could uniformly F/x colours so i have alternatives to the style/scheme i originally created. just to look at alternatives.
usually we do stuff in photoshop but i was just wondering if there was anything else out there?

what about custom photoshop plug ins? any SPECIAL ones out there?

Can you post an example of the look you're going for? I'm still not sure what it is you're looking for.

You mean shading as in something like these? I did those in Moho. You pretty much just turn on the shading feature an adjust it and viola!
