Getting Buzzed - Dear Zachary & Slumdog, A Glass of Milk, Please

Dear Zachary - Leading Contender for Best Doc of the Year?

This column formerly known as RFP's 30 Most Anticipated Fall Films has now been renamed Getting Buzzed: RFP's Seasonal Buzz Aggregator. Each Friday, I'll be writing a varying-sized piece on the weekly buzz for that season's films. Seasons will be broken up into Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer. I won't be going on about upcoming summer movies in the dead of winter or films far in the future. The purpose is to drum up interest in buzzed about work that's coming out soon, and get movie fans talking.

File It Under WTF?
This is so strange I had to mention it. Two movies are coming out within two weeks of each other in November that have surprising things in common. Both 2007 features tell the story of Indian lesbians. Both films star actresses Sheetal Sheth and Lisa Ray. Both films were directed by Shamim Sarif. THE WORLD UNSEEN is set in 1950s South Africa, while I CAN'T THINK STRAIGHT is set in modern London. Check out the trailers if you don't believe me.

Getting Buzzed
5) Gardens of the Night
Hey, it's the new Tom Arnold flick. No really you're reading that right. The buzz for the man formerly known as Rosanne's husband is pretty amazing. The story is about a girl taken from her parents at a very young age and then raised under false pretenses. The recently released trailer will tell you more. The word out of the Berlin Film Festival has been stellar.

4) Defiance
What a difference one trailer makes. The first trailer peeked my interest, but the buzz on Edward Zwick's WWII drama starring James "Daniel Craig" Bond had been fading. Watch the new trailer and see what you think.

3) Milk
When the trailer hit, it made the top of my buzz list for that week. Now critics have begun to see it and as the venerable Dave Poland of Movie City News says, "It is a brilliant, powerfully humane piece of work that reaches well beyond the issue of gay rights or any idea that this is a gay-only film." Sean Penn is looking like a leader in the Oscar best actor race.

2) Slumdog Millionaire
No other film out of the Toronto Film Festival received more positive buzz than Danny Boyle's SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Now we have a trailer. I've been a growing fan of Boyle's work. His last film, MILLIONS, was magic. I'm ready for a great uplifting film, how about you? I hope it lives up to the hype.

1) Dear Zachary: A Letter to A Son About His Father
Currently scoring 100% at Rotten Tomatoes, this documentary is getting mega praise. Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne set out to make a personal biography of his murdered friend and discovered a film larger than he could have imagined. Check out the trailer to see just how crazy this story really is. I always say serendipity is a docmaker's best friend, but in this case it's wasn't a happy accident, but a need for justice that made this happen. I want to see this film today.
