It's been two weeks since the last Getting Buzzed column, so there are a lot of trailers to see. There are many here this week that are sure to make my most anticipated films of the fall list for sure.
Getting Buzzed
14) Despicable Me (July 9, 2010)
Trailer
I'm on the fence with this one. The "fat" American stereotype is getting kind of old. But the idea of an evil mastermind stealing famous landmarks is a great idea for animation.
13) They Way We Get By (In Theaters)
Trailer
This story of a group of senior citizens who gather daily at the Bangor, Maine airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq looks like a tear-jerker and something more than just a "We Support the Troops" doc.
12) No Impact Man (Sept. 4, 2009)
Trailer
Author Colin Beavan forces his family to live their lives for a year trying to make no harmful affect on the planet. He's the one who gets the glory. His wife suffers. We are (hopefully) entertained.
11) The Girl by The Lake (July 29, 2009)
Trailer
IFC is releasing this one On Demand. I love myself a good European thriller. Was nominated for 10 David di Donatello Awards, which like the Italian Oscars.
10) White on Rice (Sept. 4, 2009)
Trailer
There's something charming about this man-boy tale. Hiroshi Watanabe from LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA stars. James Kyson Lee, aka Ando from HEROES, is in it too.
9) Balibo (Aug. 13, 2009)
Trailer
This drama looks at the atrocities that occurred in East Timor during the 1970s. Stars Anthony LaPaglia.
8) Coco Before Chanel (Sept. 25, 2009)
Trailer
The story of fashion icon Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel played by the irresistible Audrey Tautou.
7) I Love You Philip Morris (Feb. 12, 2010)
Trailer
The French have gotten the trailer for this Sundance fav before the U.S. Stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. That's all I'll say… you have to watch this crazy trailer. Oh, one more thing, it has nothing to do with the oral fixation of smoking cigarettes.
6) Whip It (Oct. 9, 2009)
Trailer
Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with this roller derby flick. What a cast — Oscar nominee Ellen Page, Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, SNL's Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, Eve, Jimmy Fallon, and Daniel Stern.
5) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (TBA)
Clips
Terry Gilliam's latest features the last performance of Heath Ledger. Gilliam is always worth watching.
4) Alice in Wonderland (March 5, 2010)
Trailer
Tim Burton's vision of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, starring Johnny Depp. Nuff said.
3) An Education (Oct. 9, 2009)
Trailer
Based on the first screenplay by author Nick Hornby (HIGH FIDELITY). I like the tone of this coming-of-age story where a teenage girl falls for a playboy nearly twice her age. That playboy is played by the always wonderful Peter Sarsgaard. Young star Carey Mulligan, played Kittie in the Keira Knightley version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE, comes off very charming.
2) Bright Star (Sept. 18, 2009)
Trailer
THE PIANO director Jane Campion is back with the true life story of poor English poet John Keats' love affair with the privileged Fanny Brawne. I like the cast — Ben Whishaw, Abbie Cornish, Paul Schneider — you might know them, but they are great actors.
1) Brothers (Dec. 4, 2009)
Trailer
Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman star in IN AMERICA director Jim Sheridan's remake of Susanne Bier's remarkable Danish drama of the same name. When Maguire is believed dead in combat, his wayward brother, played by Gyllenhaal, comes to stay with his wife, played by Natalie Portman. Drama ensues. If it's half as good as the original, it will be one of the best films of the year.
