Laika Reveals Development Slate

Nike co-founder and billionaire Phil Knight is making some noise with Laika, the Portland, Oregon-based animation studio he bought six years ago, according to VARIETY.

Laika, which does both CG and stop-motion, is scheduled to release their first feature, CORALINE on February 6, 2009 from Focus Features.

The stop-motion film follows a girl (voiced by Dakota Fanning) who stumbles upon a dark fantasy alternate universe. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS director Henry Selick helmed the picture, with Knight's son Travis the lead animator.

Connelly, Bettany Are Born With Stop-Motion

Real life husband and wife, Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany, have joined the cast of BORN, a psychological thriller featuring stop-motion animation from Chiodo Bros. Prods. (TEAM AMERICA, ELF), reports VARIETY.

Guillermo del Toro, Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing with Clive Barker on as exec producer. Steve Lanning and Cliff Lanning are also producing. Daniel Simpson is set to direct.

Wes Anderson to Direct Fantastic Mr. Fox Stop-Motion Feature

First it was Luc Bessen, now indie wunderkind Wes Anderson has moved from the live-action director's chair into more animated seating. Anderson has teamed with Revolution Studios to write and direct a stop-motion feature version of Roald Dahl's THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX, reports VARIETY. Andersons producing partner on LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU Noah Baumbach will co-pen the screenplay. Sony will distribute the flick. The book finds a crafty fox and his family under threat from three dumb, plug-ugly farmers for stealing chickens.

Cuppa Coffee Makes A Big Splash With Ritz Scuba

When J. Walter Thompson Toronto approached Cuppa Coffee Studios to develop a mixed media look for the launch of Ritz's new line of crackers "Mini Ritz SCUBA," Cuppa Coffee combined multiple mediums ranging from live-action actors, stop-motion puppets, 3D particle animation, digital post effects and embellishments, water displacement and watercolor illustrations.

Charged Teams With Nickelodeon To Produce Studio ID

Brooklyn, New York-based animation company Charged Productions has teamed with Nickelodeon to produce a studio ID to introduce Nickelodeon's latest feature film, THE WILD THORNBERRYS MOVIE. The 15-second ID, "Dog Nose," features the antics of a 3-foot tall puppy puppet filmed in stop-motion. The seeking snout of the animated pup sniffs the camera, until the Nickelodeon Movies logo is revealed. The ID ends with the playful pooch licking the lens. The spot is also being used as a channel identification logo on-air.

Imagine-Nation Expo, A Stop-Motion Convention

Cuppa Coffee Sails With Lifetime On Romantic Spots

Cuppa Coffee has created four spots for Lifetime Televisions Valentines contest "Romanced Across America Sweepstakes." Incorporating stop-motion animation and digital compositing, co-directors Warren Brown and Hector Herrera designed four different "panels" to illustrate the journey that Lifetime is sending their lucky winners on. These panels for Santa Fe, Vermont, Florida and Washington are comprised of photographs, moving illustrations and stop-motion props that were shot under camera and then digitally collaged into frame.

The PJs Movin' On Up To The WB

Warner Bros. Television will announce its fall schedule this week and it will include claymation series THE PJS. The Hollywood Reporter published the news saying that the official announcement will go before advertisers in New York on Tuesday, May 16. Earlier this year, WB had signed a deal with THE PJS producer Imagine TV/Touchstone that gave the network the option of picking up the show for the fall 2000 season. Previously airing on Fox, THE PJS future was uncertain even as late as last week.
