SELFIES is indepenedently produced by award-winning multidisciplinary artist Colin Menzies (Subliminal Rabbit) and producer Wilmer Aburto, and took a team of 15+ just over 5 years to complete. Subliminal Rabbit is the alias in which Menzies creates multimedia projects. The name is a reference to the fact that there is a hidden rabbit in each of his visual pieces.
The project explores new intersectional narratives around mental health, body image/body dysmorphia, gender, self-harm, queerness, identity and social media.
“This project started with my pencil crayon drawings loosely based on the paper dolls my sister used to make. Having grown up on fantasy films by mixed media artists like Jim Henson and Tim Burton, I was motivated to bring my character drawings to life in an animation collage to empower queer youth.”
Three episodes will be released on YouTube July 26, 2019. There are still two episodes remaining in the first season, and will be produced once additional funding has been secured.
