Mandate Pictures and Ghost House have won the rights to produce a remake of THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, reports Deadline.com. Sam Raimi is set to direct. He will produce with Rob Tapert, Michael Preger, Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Mark Gordon.

One of Raimi's favorite films as a kid, TRIFFIDS follows a meteorite shower that turns most humans blind, making them easy prey for the advanced plant lifeforms that invade afterward.

The six-figure deal includes the rights to John Wyndham's original novel on which the 1962 film was based. Preger is the rights holder of the property.
