Dark Knight Opens Larger-Than-Life In IMAX
Concurrently with THE DARK KNIGHT's debut in commercial 35mm and digital theatres, THE DARK KNIGHT: The IMAX Experience will be released in IMAX theatres July 18, 2008.
THE DARK KNIGHT: The IMAX Experience will feature six sequences filmed with IMAX cameras (including the opening six minutes).
This marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats.
Sequences shot in traditional 35mm will be digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR technology. The two formats will be seamlessly integrated and morph between full IMAX and IMAX DMR. In other words, scenes shot in 35mm will appear in IMAX DMR (letterbox), while scenes shot with IMAX's cameras on 15/70mm film will expand vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen, which can be up to eight stories tall, for an all-encompassing IMAX Experience.
IMAX theatres will allow audiences to experience THE DARK KNIGHT on some of the world's largest screens, surrounded by state-of-the-art digital surround sound. The unique theater geometry of an IMAX theatre combined with crystal clear, larger than life images and amazing digital surround sound, creates an immersive environment that puts the audience right in the movie.
"In continuing the story of such a great icon I'm thrilled to be able to expand the scope of the film, not just in terms of its story, but in giving Batman and the Joker the largest possible canvas on which to face off. No existing technology compares with the IMAX format in terms of its ability to throw the audience into the action, and we're very proud and excited to use this technology in a way that no one has before," said director Christopher Nolan.
In THE DARK KNIGHT, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good, with the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.
